Job DescriptionSenior Research Scientist I; Chemical Development in Albany, NYSummary of FunctionsThe Senior Research Scientist I's principal responsibility is in the design, synthesis, purification and identification of chemical intermediates and target compounds.
The scientist is expected to provide a source of high quality ideas and contributions to the chemical problems assigned.
Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesApplies research knowledge to plan and manage project for self and for direct reports.
Develops strategies that guide the project.
Proposes new initiatives.
Assists and leads direct reports and team members in problem-solving and new methodology.
Synthesize target compounds utilizing a blend of both classical and modern technology effectively.
Modify reaction conditions in accord with visual observations to allow rapid, successful production of target compounds.
Develop technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.
Provide new ideas based on interpretation of data.
Leads exchange of research information through technical assistance and instruction.
Available as a resource and/or collaborator.
Contributes to and/or edits publications, reports or experimental protocols; makes presentations.
Assists in grant writing/contract and proposal development.
Use a broad spectrum of practical laboratory skills as needed; including advanced methods of purification of solvents and reagents, running reactions under anhydrous and oxygen free conditions, and using advanced methods for isolation/purification of sensitive materials.
Utilize all available techniques and analytical instrumentation for monitoring laboratory experiments and the analysis of products effectively.
Manage workload and time to to perform multiple projects effectively, and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed on a timely basis.
Recommend and implement methods to increase the quality of products and/or service.
Act as a technical consultant.
Supervise Research Scientists assigned.
This includes responsibility for the appropriate motivation, education, productivity, and administration of the scientist(s).
Implements work plans; conducts performance reviews with the assistance of a higher-level manager.
Identifies and recommends career development opportunities with employees.
Conduct laboratory operations in a safe manner.
Maintain familiarity with the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices.
Follow responsible actions regarding chemical disposal.
Maintain compliance with all regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
Conduct literature searches for specific target compounds, structures related to the target compound, or to determine specific conditions for compounds and reactions.
Keep abreast of current scientific literature and discuss new findings with colleagues.
Perform other related duties as may be reasonably assigned in the course of business.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis position may have direct supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience Ph.
D.
in Chemistry, or other applicable natural science field and four years of relevant industry experience OR; Master's degree and seven years of relevant experience OR; Bachelor's and nine years of relevant experience.
Chemical Hygiene training Language/Communication Skills Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.
Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.
,) in its most difficult phases.
Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
